Me neither.  My best guess is that Lucius didn't want to risk Harry screwing
things up for him and sent Dobby to keep him out of the way.  Or Draco
wanted him out and had something to do with it.

Either that or Dobby went on his own initiative because he knew about the
plot and didn't want Harry hurt.  Dobby does tell Harry that house elves are
grateful to him because they were treated really badly while Voldemort was
around, and are relying on him to keep Voldy away for them.  However, I'm
not really happy about that story.  Quite apart from anything else, house
elves aren't normally allowed to use their magic without their owner's
permission.
