Snape commanded the Map to reveal its secret..."I Professor Snape,
master at Hogwarts, command you..." (or something similiar).
I think the Map works on the same principal as the Moody's Foe Glass.
The people who are of concern to the viewer are the ones who show up
on the map. Recall, the Twins told Harry the secret phrase to use the
map and the secret phrase to erase the map.
Maybe Lupin was using the Map to how and when Sirius was entering
Hogwarts, when he spotted Harry, Ron and Hermione.
