Senator Joseph McCarthy (from my own home state of Wisconsin, lucky me) was
almost the sole cause of the Red Scare in the 50's in America.  He was
either chair or a member of the Un-American Activities Committee, whose
purpose was almost solely to dig up supposed Communists in the country and
blackball them from here to Christmas.  It eventually spread to Socialists
and even anyone with leftist affiliations.  This lasted well into the 60's
and beyond.

He was a big ole paranoid maniac and largely responsible for the whole
Communism=Evil Incarnate attitude that so long ruled...hey, it's just an
economic philosphy, guys.
