The Sorting Hat noticed Harry's eagerness to prove himself. But Harry
didn't want to go to Slytherin, and as Dumbledore told him later the
choices he made were even more important than character traits like
ambition and courage. 

Besides, Harry also has something of Voldemort in him so that may
have played into it as well.
