That doesn't make sense to me. Why should Voldemort show mercy for a
woman from his own house who betrayed him by joining the
Potter/Dumbledore crowd?

That would be interesting. And very much like Rowling to lull her
readers into believing one thing about a group of people and then
hitting them over the head with contradictory facts.

If Lily was a Death Eater why did Voldemort need Wormtail to get to
her husband? I think he lied when he told Harry his mother needn't
have died. He wanted to torture Harry by making him feel responsible
for her death.
