Ooooh, glad someone mentioned Susan Cooper (also based in the U.K.
England and then Wales. Under Sea, Under Stone is the first one in
the series and is geared for younger children. I do think I read the
Dark is Rising as an adult..When the Dark comes rising, six shall
turn it back, three from the circle, three from the track; wood,
bronze, iron; water, fire, stone; Five will return and one go alone.
Wonderful, outstanding stuff (but I have no idea if it has literary
merit).

The Narnia Chronicles are wonderful and I believe that we must give
them to our kids early so that they are not too old to be totally
enraptured by them. My son (aged 3) enjoys having the simplified
versions read to him, and has watched the video. We've now gotten
through the first three chapters (one at a time) of the Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe, adult version, and he just loves them.
(We just started reading the PS to him....he already loves "Harry
Powder" from listening to snatches on the tape, and hearing us talk
and chose HP to be at Halloween instead of Zorro, and Robin Hood..his
other two favorites)

The Hobbitt is actually one of my least favorites...whereas the LOTR
is one of my most favorites!

Also, no one has yet mentioned Patricia Wrede's Magician's Ward, etc.
Light, but fun...

Also, don't neglect Robert Heinlein's juveniles (Citizen of the
Galaxy or Starman Jones) or Andre Norton's juveniles.

My best suggestion is: find a second hand store and get him a bunch
of books!

Susan
