I have to say I agree with a lot of the things you said. One of the
things I've thought for quite a while now is that people underestimate
Ron. Because he doesn't seem to have the "smarts" that Hermione does or
Harry's Quidditch skills and scar and isn't the focus of the books,
people always assume that he's weaker than either one of them. While I'm
not claiming that Ron's the most powerful wizard in existance, I do think
that he's quite powerful in his own way. I mean, it's stated that he and
Harry do quite well on their exams even though we *know* they never
study. If he didn't have ability he would be a more Neville-like
character. Ron is insecure, but he's a teenage boy with legends for
older siblings to compete with. I think his insecurity is
understandable. I also think Hermione is just as insecure as he is. If
she wasn't would she really be bragging about her knowledge in class the
way she does? I think, that given time, both of them will mature and
gain self -esteem. Ron won't feel the need to compete with his brothers
and Hermione won't be so desperate about showing off. . . . (note: this
is why I can never buy the whole "Harry and Hermione are more equal"
argument)
I'm not anti-H/H. I just think R/H is just as right (more IMO) as an H/H
pairing would be.
My main complaint with the H/H idea is (besides the Ron issue) that the
books would turn into the Harry and Hermione Show (tm). I mean, even PoU
(the best H/H work I've read) places such significance on the
relationship that Hermione gets as much, if not more, screen time as
Harry. The books are about Harry, and, to a lesser degree, his
friendship with Ron and Hermione. If he and Hermione got together, I
can't think of any way it would be possible to keep this structure
intact. Ron would be shoved off to the side and Harry and Hermione would
have the entire stage to themselves. That's why I'm more in favor of a
Harry/ other pairing (H/G being my favorite). A secondary character can
be important but could never steal screen time away from Harry or Ron and
Hermione.
Although actually . . . I still think it's silly to try and see what
person is the destined love of a 14 year old kids life ;)
That's my opinion. Feel free to have yours ;)
