My husband & I both (separately) took English classes in college which dealt
with foldtales, fairy tales & myths - I mainly studdied Greek, Roman & Norse
mythology, whereas he ended up with a collection of books about folktales &
fairy tales from Russia, China, Scandinavia, Japan, India, Native American
tribes, Africa and of course Britain (we also have a Celt Folktales book too)
and today I finally took the time to flip thru the British Folktales book -
it was written by Katherine Briggs and even tho it's out of print you can
find it at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0394739930/qid=970099713/sr=1-9/102-2076998-4651356
(sort of)
And here's what it talks about:
Big black dogs the size of bears (and shape shifting devil dogs)
Boggarts
Pixies
Dragons (in Linton, Longwitton and Wantley (are these places still around &
if so where?)
The Hand of Glory (remember Draco's shopping trip to Knockturn Alley?)
and a story about a witch who, when she died, was wrapped in a Stag's skin to
save her soul from the devil.
It certainly has more relevance to the HP books than Ms Schaffer's extensive
discourse on Greek & Roman mythology, and on a glance the stories are very
interesting - soem of Amazon's "Z" Shops seem to carry it for between 20 &
25$US, in case anyone else wants it.
And I am definitely incorporating some of this into the Magical Creatures FAQ
which I am currently working on...
