On the other hand, as the only person Voldemort feared, Dumbledore was an
excellent choice. But to lift from an earlier post of mine,

Dumbledore offered. In book 3, ch 10, McGonagall says she remembers that
Dumbledore offered, because he was sure someone close to the Potters was a
Voldmort informant, but that James insisted on using Sirius, and "told
Dumbledore that Black would die rather than tell where they were."
The reason Dumbledore wasn't was that James said no.
