I'm reminded of GeneWilder's nightmare in Young Frankenstein  - "Destiny!
Destiny! No escaping Destiny!" - by not immediately looking up his maternal
archives HP is perhaps avoiding what is his inevitable destiny - and
besides, JKR has masterfully hooked us in as readers by leaving massive
chunks of the story's background unclear, and then only gradually revealing
it to us.

As for the details of his parents' death - who knew, save James, Lily and
Voldy? Voldy was certainly eager to give his side of the story as soon as it
became feasible.
