I still find it hard to believe that Hermione hasn't done some digging
around.  But, it does serve the plot for us all to be in the dark along
with Harry so . . .

I think that is *exactly* why Harry won't live with (or spend a
tremendous amount of time with) Sirius in the next book or 2.  It would
be completely implausible for him to live with Sirius & *not* find out
all sorts of information that JKR doesn't want him or us knowing just
yet.  Sirius knew his parents best and probably has as good an idea as
anyone other than those who were there as to what happened that
Halloween night in 1981.
