I don't think either that bragging is the right word for what
Hermione does. She is insecure and hides behind a bossy attitude,
especially in SS/PS. She grew up knowing that she was somehow
different from everybody else. When the letter from Hogwarts arrived
she finally found a place where she fits in, but many of her fellow
students have an eleven year headstart on her. If you find a place
you belong after not quite fitting in all your life the last thing
you want is being an outsider again because of lack of skill or
knowledge.
Hermione is probably the only student of her year who has read all
the books on her school list before she ever boards the Hogwarts
Express, not to mention 'Hogwarts - A History'. When she is always
the first to raise her hand in class she tells the teachers "Yes, I
know how to do this and therefore I belong here." I also found the
reason interesting she gave for taking Muggle studies. She wants to
look at her "old world" from the point of view of her "new people".
