I think Neville has been under-used as a character. In book 1, he
single-handedly took on Crabbe and Goyle during the Quidditch Match.
Granted he was knocked unconscious, the main thing was is that he
took
on two bigger kids. That takes either courage or foolhardiness or
both.
As for Snape disliking Neville, I'm beginning to suspect Snape
dislikes any student whose family was on the Ministry's side during
the V. years such as Ron, Harry, and Neville. I'm sure if Neville's
gran ever got a hold of Snape she'd whack him with that big red
handbag of hers.
