Hmm...I took that to mean that they'd never told Harry
about his parents or the circumstances of their death.
Dumbledore *did* leave a letter with Harry on the
Dursleys' doorstep explaining why Harry had to live
with them. He indicated that they would explain it
all to Harry when he was old enough.
Evidence seems to rule against the idea of Muggle
parents getting previous letters, at least to my
reading. All the Muggle-born wizards talk about how
surprised they and their parents were at getting the
letter. Justin Fitch-Fletchly says his name was down
for Eton, which wouldn't be the case if his mother
already knew he was going to Hogwarts. And I recall
Colin Creevy saying something about his dad the
milkman being very surprised too.
