Quite right - but I said "hurt"  - not kill.  I was thinking more 
along the lines of the fact that if Snape got an inkling that 
Voldemort wanted to kill the Potters - and we know that they were 
targeted and that a spy of Dumbledore got wind of it - perhaps this 
was enough to bring Snape to his senses.  It didn't necessarily need 
to be a reaction to something after the fact.  I assume that all the 
death eaters had instructions to find the Potters - therefore perhaps 
he had come to the conclusion that he couldn't countenance these 
particular deaths and tried to pre-empt instead.
