I've got the US first edition (we picked it up the week it came out), and the 
sentence reads "but I've *never* heard of a curse scar acting as an alarm 
bell before..." (emphasis mine). He seems to be implying that Harry's case is 
unusual, and therefore less than trustworthy. It does seem like a rather 
vital word to leave out of the sentence, though - what edition do you have?
