Plus, it's entirely possible that there's been examples of this sort of 
protection happening before. Dumbledore does say that it's "ancient magic". 
The concept of Willing Sacrifice makes Great Magic is a pretty common one 
in most magical theories.
Dumbledore probably never brought it up 1) because he'd not seen it in 
action re: Harry therefore 2) he didn't want to give Harry a false sense of 
security.
