Oh, I don't know. Don't most real epics end with the hero dying? In 
fact, before this last century or so, when we got all soft about such 
things, wasn't killing off the hero pretty much obligatory?

Achilles and Hector - Dead
Sigurd - Dead
Beowulf - Dead
King Arthur - Dead
Robin Hood - Dead
Hamlet - Dead

And even today, we have the good old traditional touch of "No story 
complete without the hero as a corpse," in movies such as "Gladiator." 

However, I don't think Harry is going to die for a purely dramatic 
reason. I think he'd be a wonderful choice to die, except that the 
book would end with the Dursleys finally getting their heart's desire.
