For me, it's much the same. First, I didn't really like the thought of reading fan fiction and I couldn't tell any more when and how exactly I got into it, first reading and then writing.

But what finally appealed to me was that every bit of ff, regardless of length, topic, quality etc., is always a very personal interpretation of the HP characters, unless of course all the ff characters have in common with the canon characters is the name.

IMO, writing ff is as good a means of character interpretation or plot speculation as some of the really brilliant step-by-step analyses (yes, yours, Luke!) we have been fortunate enough to read on this list. It's a question of how your mind is working. I personally find it much easier to write e.g. a Snape-monologue, making him explain all about his past, than putting together an organized analysis.

"And how come those portraits seem to be alive?"

"What'ya mean? All paintings move."

"No, they don't. We have lots of paintings in our villa, among them a real Chagall, and none of them..."

"And d'ya expect that something painted by a jackal will move? Now really..."
