I'm drawing a blank on the canon source of this info. Help, anyone?

I don't really recall where we are told that it is a man who opens the
door, but there is an easy explanation anyway: the enemy's already
within: Wormtail takes Voldemort there, and enters (alone) for a visit.
On some excuse ("Dumbledore needs your invisible cape... why don't you
go to the owl-post-office and send it? I'll take care of Lily and the
boy while you're gone"). It actually makes more sense.

Anyway, the idea behind my theory is to demonstrate that James and Lily
didn't necessarily die after the rebound, but could have died before it,
by Voldemort's hand. The timeline was meant as an example (athough, if
it happens to be true, I'll be very proud of it).
