Since I first read SS/PS, I thought that Snape was the one who
gave Harry the Invisability Cloak, all on the basis of some
carefully choosen words. On the card attached to the Cloak, it ends
off with " and a Very Merry Christmas to you". A bit too friendly for
Snape but the rest of the note is too formal for it to be Dumbledore
( Possibly McGonagall?, narrow, loppy writing narrows it down to
these two since neither Potions or transfiguration require them to
write). Later, after the trio inform McGonagall about what they
know about the stone, they are confronted by Snape, who uses the same
formalities, ends off with a "Good day to you" and walks off.
But Snape's knowledge of the cloak probably comes from 'personal'
experiences with the Maurauders.
Now, McGonagall's no slouch and it's probably more plausible
that she had possession of the cloak since she is Gryffindor's Head of
house and the cloak was returned after she punished Harry and co.
for being out late. But I still like the idea of Snape having the
cloak because there's more to his part in that novel asides from
deflecting suspicion off Quirrel and muttering one counter-curse.
