I've thought about this too, actually. I also don't
have an office set of the books, but I seem to recall
in SS/PS that the students see the points reflected in
some set of hourglass-like pillars in a central
location. A magical way of keeping track of the
points, a la the magic quill that records the birth of
young wizards and witches, seems like the most
efficient way of recording the points.

Also, has anyone else noticed some, um, point
inflation between the books? In SS/PS, Snape takes
away one point from Harry for his "cheek," and I think
it was pretty common for points to be given or taken
away one at a time. By GF, though, points are almost
always given at least five at a time, aren't they?

Of all the details to pay attention to... :)
