Ah, but then why not repair the briefcase with magic? I think it 
once belonged to a beloved Muggle relative, also named 
Professor R. J. Lupin, from whom Lupin inherited the both case 
and the ambition to become a teacher. This would explain the 
worn, aged appearance and the reason it couldn't be enchanted 
(because it was a Muggle artifact.)
