I am inclined to agree that having a vendetta
against an eleven year old is not very adult behavior.
But Snape should get some credit for the lengths he
goes to protect Harry dispite his dislike for him.

Well he could have written a note or something.
Harry could undoubtedly have found an opportunity to
apologize etc. had he wanted to. However it is
understandable that an eleven year old would prefer to
avoid what would inevitably have been a difficult
conversation.
