fanfiction, that I quit reading it. Things like Hermione and Malfoy
getting together actually start sounding reasonable to some of the
readers when there is absolutely nothing in canon to indicate that
this is remotely possible. Don't get me wrong. I think that writers
should certainly be free to spin out whatever scenarios appeal to
them for whatever reason. My problem was that in reading some of the
reviews, people started to prefer the fanfic versions to JKRs to the
point that they ignore the world she has so carefully built, and
substitute the "bizzare-o"alternate version.
In canon, Hermione LOATHES Malfoy. She actually physically attacks
him in POA. He doesn't pick on her the way boys do when they "like"
someone, he attacks her background in the most vile way, and actually
wishes her dead (POA, when Harry & Ron use the polyjuice potion to
impersonate Crabbe & Goyle).
Hermione is portrayed in the books and highly principled and
intelligent, as well as kind and loyal. There's not one shred of
evidence that she would ever betray her friends, by taking up with DM.

The "shipping wars" are fascinating and sort of disturbing to me. I
kind of thought this stuff was supposed to be "all in fun", but now
it sounds as if people are taking it so seriously that if JKR takes
her characters in a direction contrary to a shippers
hopes/dreams/demands, that they my actually abandon the books for
violating their individual fantasies. What a shame that would be.
I really hope we don't have to wait too much longer for Book 5, since
the more we pick things apart and speculate, the more we may harm our
enjoyment of the books themselves. Wasn't that the point of this
list in the first place? What do you think?
