Well...does he have to have the paying job to be a professor?  I have 
no clue, honestly; but if he'd gotten a wizard's PhD, wouldn't he be 
able to call himself a Professor of Whatever even without a job?  

Also, the case could have been an optimistic gift from someone when 
he first finished his whatever degree ("since you're going to be a 
Very Important Professor now, and all..."); then even without having 
got a job that case was the only one he had so he's used it to death.

Erg.  Okay, so that last is borderline soppy and completely 
unfounded.
