There were many references to Harry being a great wizard in the books.
My fav is Hagrid, "an' a thumpin' good 'un once yeh've been trained up a
bit". Hermione also states that Harry is a great wizard before he goes
into the chamber at the end. Ollivander said that "we should come to
expect great things from you."
I think in each book, Harry becomes a little more powerful in his
magical talents, but his character is also powerful. Remember when he
gave Gred and Forge the Galleons at the end? He also asked them to buy
new Robes for Ron, but to Ron they are from them. I think Harry prefers
to lurk in the background, but is forced into the public simply because
of who he his.
