Narcissa Malfoy has exactly one scene in the books, and no lines. Yet,
she is a hot topic of debate, with a large number of people holding to
a theory that she is Lily's and Petunia's sister. But, what does canon
really tell us about Narcissa?
The short answer, not much.
Narcissa is married to Lucius Malfoy, and has a son, Draco. There do
not appear to be any other children of this marriage. None are
mentioned and when the family attends the World Cup, it would have
been strange to leave them home. It is, of course, vaguely possible
that Draco has siblings, deceased, disappeared etc. Or perhaps a
younger sibling, left at home with a house-elf nanny. But all
appearances point towards Draco being an only child.
How old is Narcissa? There is absolutely nothing in canon to give her
age. Lucius was definitely born after 1933. (He was not at Hogwarts
when Moaning Myrtle was killed.) It is hardly likely that Narcissa is
older. Both still have blonde hair, but looks in the wizarding world
can be deceiving in terms of age. On the other hand, the adverserial
nature of Lucius' relationship with Arthur Weasley perhaps point to
their being around the same age... which is? Dunno. Perhaps in their
50's. And, there's really nothing that couldn't make him a lot
younger, even the Potters' age. (Though Sirius's list of Snape's
friends at school does not include Malfoy.) I can't imagine Narcissa
being much older than Lucius in any case.
There are two common perceptions, though, about Narcissa's age, both
equally valid. One that she is roughly her husband's age. The other
that she is a younger trophy wife.
The second seems quite realistic given all we know of Lucius. It could
also explain why Lucius, much older than James Potter perhaps, has a
son Draco's age. If Narcissa is much younger, she could be born as
late as 1962, presuming she married right out of Hogwarts, and had
Draco directly.
On the other hand, Draco's age does not anywhere near prove
Narcissa's. Some have pointed out that Narcissa might have put off
child-bearing for years, for fear of ruining her figure. In this case,
she could have been married for a long time before Draco came along.
And, it's possible that she married late.
Why don't Lucius and Narcissa have more children (apparently)?
While plenty of people have only one child, it might be considered
strange that a couple so obsessed with the continuation of proper
bloodlines, would leave it to the Weasleys to populate the earth. Four
reasons come to mind for this.
1) Narcissa thinks it would ruin her figure. :)
2) Lucius wants to pass on the estate whole to Draco. In the past,
infant mortality etc. would have necessitated the Malfoys to have more
than one child (and bundle the extras off to a monastery unless
needed.) However, Draco is pretty likely to survive in these more
advanced times.
3) Real-life reasons. Infertility etc.
4) An estrangement between Lucius and Narcissa
I'm sorry. I need to run. I'll post the rest of it, as soon as I can.
