I think the sorting hat sees qualities in the student that perhaps 
nobody else(the students themselves, their teachers, and us the 
readers) sees.  After all, going by character's stock descriptions, 
Ron could be in Hufflepuff, Neville certainly would be, and Cedric 
Diggory could well fit into Gryffindor.  Just because a character 
appears suited for a house form our perspective, doesn't mean the 
sorting hat sees it that way.
