I think Narcissa could play much more of a role in the future books,
although she could easily as well be a non-entity as well. First,
Draco seems pretty spoiled: gets daily cany by owl post, wanted the
hand at borgin & burkes (which Lucius then berated him for poor
grades in not purchasing the wanted item, suggesting his mother was
the spoiler,) constantly taunts Ron about his family's poverty and
Harry about his being an orphan. Draco takes insult about his mother
far worse than he gives; it was Harry's inquiries about whether
Narcissa always had that look of dung under her nose that prompted
Draco to cast a spell at Harry's back. At the same time, there are
some hints that Narcissa might not be a Death Eater or even supporter
of Voldemort. Harry, Ron and Hermione assume that both Lucius and
Narcissa are among the Death Eaters at the World Cup, but thats an
assumption that both were participants. At the graveyard, Voldemort
chastises Lucius for fleeing the Dark Mark but that didnt include
Narcissa. Further, when Voldemort went through the Death Eaters, to
the right of Wormtail was Lucius. To Lucius' left was the empty
spaces for the Lestranges. Narcissa might have been one of the other
unspecified Death Eaters, but it would make sense that Lucius and
Narcissa would have spaces together among the Death Eaters. Finally,
Narcissa is the one described by Draco as deciding to send the little
brat to Hogwarts despite Lucius prefering the Durmstrang and the more
sensible emphasis on the Dark Arts. In any case, Ms. Rowling
certainly seems willing to throw a number of curves, perhaps Narcissa
could play an interesting role against Voldemort in the future.
