Why something so prosaic as a compass? Think of Dumbledore's "watch" and the
"clocks" at the Weasley house. I could see Hagrid using a magical compass which
would direct him to fly on the route least likely to get him spotted. That could
have taken him over nearly any location (and might have taken a good bit longer
than one would normally calculate).
