First, I like your idea of Dumbledore being Hedwig...I'll have to think
about that.

Hermione says there are a few that are registered, but we have no idea
how many aren't registered.  Black, Skeeter, Potter, and Pettigrew were
never registered, so they can't count toward the total. I don't think
Lupin counts as animagus. I wonder what his would've been though.
Rowling has also hinted that there's a correlation between the animagus
and the person.
