Regarding the whole Hedwig-Dumbledore connection:
I don't buy it. It's logistics, actually. Hedwig is doing too many things
the whole series (delivering letters, going to Sirius, getting locked in a
cage). That assumes that Dumbledore is gone for long stretches to do
errands for Harry. Bloody unlikely.
Besides, I kind of assumed that Harry was with Hagrid when he bought Hedwig
in the shop.

>Also, Hermione tells Harry that there are only a few (I think it's
7?) registered Animagi from this century... I think figuring out who
they are could be a big help for deciphering future books...
>So far it goes:
>Sirius Black (padfoot)
>Rita Skeeter (the beetle)
>Professor McGonagall (the cat)
>James Potter (the stag)
>Peter Pettigrew (wormtail)
Excuse me, only Professor McGonagall is a registered Animagus in that list.
Lupin says so in PA, "But they didn't know that there were THREE
unregistered Animagi running around Hogwarts..." to paraphrase. So cross
out James, Sirius and Peter. Rita Skeeter is also an unregistered
Animagus. If Rita was registered, Hermione would have figured out how she
was getting scoops in Hogwarts waaaaaaay quicker (because she read that
thing on Animagi last year). Besides, it's mentioned in GoF.
