Hm.

Unless they were, perhaps, trying to change their ways, and raise their kids as
non-werewolves? Or perhaps they wouldn't have tried to "cure" him, but then they
found out that he was a wizard (effectively a Muggle-born), and wanted him to
have opportunities in the wizard world that had been denied to them?

All of this is pretty far-fetched, I'll grant you. No one would be more
surprised than I if it turned out to be what JKR really has in mind. Her names
are good clues to the traits of her characters, but their meanings don't always
make so much sense if considered as names parents give to children. I doubt
Hermione's parents thought she was going to spend much of her twelfth year as a
statue, for example.
