My impression is that Durmstrang is in Norway towards the arctic circle.
Norway is *known* for their ship building, the vikings, and it's frigid
there (so I've heard). I definitely think it's somewhere in Scandinavia,
though. 

It was really strange...when I was reading about their ship, my image of
it the ship when it was moored in the lake was what someone might
imagine in the Rhyme of the Ancient mariner, when it's sitting on the
ocean with no breeze, just sort of rocking a creeking..really spooky,
and desolate.
