IIRC, in CoS, Snape defers to Minerva in determining and assigning detention 
to Harry and Ron.  She also drags Malfoy off to Snape when he is discovered 
on his dragon-hunt.  However, in GoF, Snape imposes it directly on Harry and 
Ron - was it the nature of the offense?

Also in GoF, the first description of Rita Skeeter and her meeting with 
Dumbledore might lead some to believe that she is something besides an 
animagus.  What future evil is she up to once Hermione releases her?
