JKR has stated more than once that, in order to write the books, she has 
composed "back stories."  That is, Hagrid's childhood, as well as Lily's, 
James's, Snape's, and Sirius's, exist in her notes.  What a joy that would be 
to read, no?
  And, to all on the list, a very merry, happy whatever you are celebrating 
during this way-too-warm (at least in New York) December!
