I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but I have been wondering
just what curse Voldemort was planning to use on Harry after he killed
Lily and James. It seems to me that it has always been assumed it was
the Avada Kedavra curse and that Voldemort was trying to kill Harry,
but does anyone actually know that this is the case?

The only person who knows for sure what happened after Voldemort killed
Lily and James is himself and Harry. Could it not be that Voldemort was
actually planning to use some other curse on the baby, one that would
allow him to use Harry in some way? That he didn't actually planning to
kill Harry at all?

We do know that a curse was used, as Hagrid says: "That was no ordinary
cut. That's what yeh get when a powerful evil curse touches you." (PS/
SS chap 4). He goes on to say it was the same curse that took care of
Harry's mum and dad and house, but I can remember nothing but hearsay
regarding what happened at Godric's Hollow that night.

Yes, Harry has the scar. But does Hagrid mean that this type mark is
always left when the Avada Kedavra curse is used, and we would have
found a similar mark on his parents and on Cedric. Or is this type of
mark seen as the aftermath of ANY powerful evil curse? Hagrid also goes
on to say that: "No one ever lived after he decided ter kill `em, no
one except you." So how does he (and other wizards) know that such a
mark is left if the Avada Kedavra curse does not work? It sounds like
Harry is the first person to have survived the Avada Kedavra curse, so,
how would people have known that survivors end up with a curse mark?
Surely it is more likely that the mark is the sign of an evil curse
rather than a specific one.

If the curse backfired because of Lily's protection of her son, could
this have also caused the link between Voldemort and Harry?
