First the curse, the Avada Kedavra curse is THE killing curse,
and it is such a powerfull killing curse that it is banned. 
It's use will get you life in Azkaban. So if you are an evil
Dark Lord trying to kill someone, isn't it the most logical
curse to use? Plus, different curses have different colors. 
The Avada Kedavra curse is green, and Harry remembers seeing 
green when he was cursed by Voldemort. That certainly helps 
verify the curse. Plus, there may be other signs that have not
been discussed in the book, that are found when the body of a 
person killed by the Avada Kedavra curse is examined. 

The scar, the scar doesn't occur with every killing curse. It
happened with Harry because something went wrong, and the curse
backfired on Voldemort. It's because things went wrong that 
Harry was left with the scar. They know that when this curse
is used and it backfire that a scar is left because Harry is 
living proof of that.

Plus, remember that everyone in the wizard world has had 11
years to think about this and analyze it, and come up with
thier own conclusion about what happened and why.
