At the moment, I mostly concur with McGonnigal's stated opinion on
Hagrid: "I'm not saying his heart isn't in the right place, . . . but
you can't pretend he's not careless."
In many ways, Hagrid is very much locked in his own skull, in that he
assumes that other people are fundamentally pretty much like him.
That other people aren't big-and-tough like him, or that they don't
have his knowledge of and way with ferocious beasts, continually
slips his mind. He rarely considers the possiblity of treachery on
someone else's part until after it happens - all his arguments for
defending Snape in PS/SS, while true, would have worked equally well
for Quirrell, for whom they would not have been.
There's also the issue of his drinking problem and his
overemotionality, although JKR seems to be highly adept at making
those plot devices as much as character flaws.
Having said that, his overgrown and overflowing heart definately _is_
in the right place, and I have no doubt that he'd defend Harry with
his life if that's what is demanded of him.
(I have no particular theories on who will be called to make the
ultimate sacrifice, but I really doubt it's Ron - he _already_
sacrificed himself for Harry, on the chessboard in PS/SS; surely he
wouldn't be asked to do it again?)
