Well, I haven't seen the special, so this is just musing, but didn't
she mention she wrote down affiliation and magical power? Thus, "N"
might stand for natural talent, perhaps the star with the circle
means a balance of talent and book learning, and the star means the
student really has to struggle.
On the other hand, the symbol might be affiliation of either the
student or parents. If it's for parents, the "N" might stand for No
Affiliation, i.e. muggle-born. The star with the circle would perhaps
mean one or more parent was a DE (notice in GF we only see one Crabbe
and one Goyle; with couples like the Lestranges we would hear about
both if they were in the inner circle), and the star would mean
goodishness. Still, I can hardly imagine Seamus's or Lavender's parent
(s) being a Voldy. Oh well, looks like we'll have another few years
to truly find out.
