You really think she would go for the obvious?  Has she ever gone for the
obvious in all the previous plots?  Who here suspected that Hermione would
go to the Yule Ball with Victor Krum?  This is just one example of a dating
situation where she has been unexpected.  Yes, she has been sowing the seeds
for a Ron / Hermione pairing, but she also sowed the seeds for Sirius being
a deranged criminal, and Quirrell being innocent, and Hagrid being the one
who opened the Chamber, and Moody being a good guy.

I just can't imagine that she would not monkey around with our perceptions.
So that just leaves everyone with their own preferences.  I really don't
think any of us can claim to *know* where JKR is going to go with this
issue.
