I hadn't really considered the rudeness of it either, the first time 
around, but when I really looked at it... I think it's just that it's 
probably more thoughtful not to bring it up unless the other person 
has indicated a willingness to discuss it.  She seems to be talking 
about it as if it's some interesting bit of history, but for Harry, 
it's not history, it's his life, and the reason that he has spent 
pretty much his whole life in an abusive home.
