[HPforGrownups] A need for Filch?

House elves are not mentioned until Book2, so maybe they were an 
afterthought of JKR's.  Another thought - if there were house elves out and 
about all the time, the students might make the elves do all of their work 
for them.  Remember, the only house elf that left the kitchen was Dobby and 
he is a bit of a nutter.
