Troll incident

Ooh, Moongirl, thank you--you reminded me of a question I've had for 
ages!  (Well, since November, when I first read PS, anyway.)

I do not get the whole Hermione-lies-to-get-them-out-of-trouble thing 
in the troll incident.  The story she tells is very close to what 
actually happened; the only significant difference is that she makes 
out that she went looking for the troll on purpose.  (Also that she 
doesn't mention that H & R inadvertently locked her in with the 
troll--but I'm not sure she even knows that.)  The rest of the 
story--they heard the troll and rescued her--is in fact what happened. 
  So what did she do to save their skins with McGonagall?
