I read an interesting theory, wish I would claim as my own, but alas,
I am not that smart~~

The one I'm talking about is that V was attempting to bring Lily to
the dark side and was trying to kill James & Harry as a test of her
loyalty to him. It helps the "Lily didn't have to die" comment to
come together somewhat. It does leave open the question of why Harry
didn't die, but it's an interesting twist on Lily not "having" to
die.
Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.....
