lol I'm from the State of Maryland, the geographic beginning of the 
Southern US. "Going down town" or "going down to someplace" is a 
normal colloquialism.  

I remember being taught in school that Southern American English 
dialect, especially the Appalachian dialect, is "closer" to British 
English (that is 17th and 18th century British English) than 
contemporary British English. I don't know if that is true.
