Hermione's family hasn't been discussed that much, really.  How would 
you react if your child got a Hogwarts letter? Here are two 
professionals, dentists, who get a letter that their daughter has just 
been accepted to a school for witches and wizards. And they just let 
her go? Huh? How were they convinced? 

Perhaps Hermione had been doing some very strange things in her 
childhood and the explanation was a relief, but we aren't told. (Think 
about the strange things Harry had been doing before he got his 
letter.)
