As for Sirius' innocence, Dumbledore didn't know that Sirius *didn't* do
the crime until after he got to talk to him at the end of PoA. To his
credit, he believed him at that point, but prior to that, Dumbledore
neither knew Sirius was innocent nor that he was an animagus. I refuse
to believe Dumbledore would (a) condone the imprisonment of an innocent
man in Azkaban, even if all he could do was complain, or (b) withhold
potentially valuable information (animagus ability) about a dangerous
criminal.
