Hi! I'm fairly new here, but just had to respond....
This point has bugged me as well. In the first book,
Harry gets his list of school supplies and it includes
a uniform of 3 work robes, protective gloves, a hat,
and a cloak. From this, I kind of got the idea of,
say, school clothes as opposed to after school clothes
(anyone else have this as a kid? I went to a private
school, so that's probably why I made that
association) After all, only 3 sets of "clothes" for
the better part of a year to wear? Later on in the
series a couple of dress robes are thrown in, but
still....I guess I assumed, with help from Grandpre's
illustrations that their "play clothes" were muggle in
styling.
Under the robes, I guess I just thought they wore the
play clothes, but the uniforms from the movie make
more sense to me now.
Even then, this is part of a bigger thing that I've
wondered about in the Harry Potter world: Did anyone
else, when first reading the first book see the
wizarding population as just kind of being hidden
within the muggle population? That all the
celebrating and running around in robes the day after
Voldemort was defeated was kind of giving away a
secret part of the culture that tried to blend in more
with the world around it? Since then, the dividing
line between the magic and the muggle worlds has
become more and more pronounced to the point of
Archie's nightgown tendencies, but that was what I
first started off with....Maybe there are some more
submerged in the Magic world than others? And the
kids are a little more savvy in this information age
(even though none ever seem to have contact with a
computer)?
Thanks for listening to a list newbie ramble,
